Prostitutes and other criminal elements removed from Pattaya Beach

In the early hours of Tuesday Pattaya Police conducted a search for prostitutes and other suspected criminal elements on Pattaya Beach.

A total of 50 women and Ladyboy’s were detained and taken to Pattaya Police Station where their details were taken and a criminal history search was made to ensure that none of the detainees were currently wanted in connection with a previous crime.

The Pattaya Police Chief ordered the operation as he is concerned that those who loiter on Pattaya Beach in the early hours of the morning may be planning to commit crimes against Tourists or may be involved in prostitution which can tarnish the image of the City, especially as the ASEAN Economic Community, which begins in 2015, will open up Thailand and Pattaya to the rest of the region. Local government officials are concerned that Pattaya will only be known for its sex industry and crime.

In a move which is unlikely to deter those detained from returning to their original activities, each person was fined 100 Baht and sent on their way.

ATM ROBBERY IN JOMTIEN

Multi-Million Baht ATM robbery in Jomtien

PATTAYA: 29-04-2014

In the early hours of Monday a multi-million Baht robbery of an ATM situated outside of a Concrete Company took place.

Police were called to the front of the S-Con Concrete Company located on the Sukhumvit Road in Jomtien by Khun Paitoon aged 42, a Security Guard employed to watch-over the company compound overnight.

At the front of the business is a stand-alone Siam Commercial Bank ATM which had been broken-into through a rear steel door.

The rear of the ATM cabinet had also been broken-into and it is thought many millions of Baht had been taken.

The Security Guard claimed he was alerted to a problem after he smelled burning at the front of the Concrete Shop.

He went to investigate and saw four men all wearing Balaclavas. One was sitting in a Black Isuzu pick-up, 2 were standing outside on the street and another of the suspects was carrying two of the money boxes taken from the ATM, towards the pick-up.

The guard decided not to confront the men and could only offer Police a partial registration number of the vehicle.

Also a security camera covering the ATM had been pushed upwards so the incident could not be filmed.

Police are now checking CCTV along the Sukhumvit Road and are further questioning the Security Guard to ensure he was not somehow involved in the theft.

The case continues.

PATTAYA NIGHTLIFE

Pattaya Nightlife begins its return to 'normality' following changes to curfew times.

PATTAYA: 28 MAY 2014

Late on Tuesday Night, The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) announced a change to the Curfew times which was welcomed by many, including owners of entertainment venues in Pattaya who have seen a drop in revenue since the NCPO imposed a curfew starting at 10pm.

Earlier pressure from the Tourism Authority of Thailand and other Tourism Associations is thought to have been a factor in the Councils decision to amend the curfew times, despite the continuing anti-coup demonstrations around the Kingdom, especially in Bangkok.

American Man Arrested for Pattaya Murder

On March 18 the police found the body of a girl who had been murdered and packed into a black bag and left on the roof of Le Petite Planete restaurant . The girl was identified as Ms.Anutsara (Nam) Paja aged 19 from Buriram province. In addition the police had questioned her friends and found out that Ms.Anutsara and her friends (both Thais and foreigners) were going to Koh Lan island.

She witnessed that Ms.Anutsara was packing her bag in her room and after she saw Mr Tim walked down to the ground floor and walked off alone. Monks needed

Buddhist temples in Thailand face a shortfall of nearly 100,000 monks.

Helping to promote a campaign to attract novices, Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome presided over a ceremony at Jittapawan College where 70 men had their hair cut in preparation for being ordained.

Thailand is home to about 300,000 temples, 30,000 of which are abandoned and a further 8,000 are served by a solitary monk.

CRIME (GLOBAL DRUG NETWORK)

Dutch B100m drug link busted

Authorities have seized assets worth more than 100 million baht from a Dutchman and his Thai wife who were arrested in Pattaya Wednesday.

A Department of Special Investigation official takes Dutch drug suspect Johannes Petrus Maria van Vanarhoven from his house in Chon Buri’s Bang Lamung district, after earlier searching it.

The arrest came after a request from the Netherlands where the couple are wanted on drug trafficking charges.

Senior officials from the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG), the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo) and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), equipped with arrest and search warrants from the Criminal Court and the Pattaya Court, searched buildings and houses belonging to the couple at four locations in Bang Lamung and Sattahip districts of Chon Buri.

The Dutch government asked Thai authorities to arrest and extradite Johannes Petrus Maria van Vanarhoven and his wife Mingkwan Kaen-in for their involvement in the trafficking of marijuana through a drug network in the Netherlands.

The couple are wanted on two counts of transnational drug trafficking and money-laundering.

They also face criminal charges in Thailand for operating a transnational criminal racket and will have to face punishment here before being extradited to the Netherlands.

Surasak Trirattrakul, director-general of the OAG’s Litigation Department, said the Netherlands has also pressed drug trafficking charges against the elder brother of the Dutch suspect but he had earlier been arrested in the Netherlands.

The suspect and his Thai wife have been accused of smuggling large quantities of marijuana into the Netherlands for sale.

They had been involved in drug trafficking for several years and laundering money from the sale of drugs to buy properties and other assets in several countries, including Thailand, the chief prosecutor said.

Amlo secretary-general Seehanat Prayoonrat said his office initially seized 10 bank accounts connected to the couple and their two children totalling 20 million baht, about 100 million baht worth of buildings and condos in Samut Prakan and three of their cars worth about 30 million baht, gold ornaments, two Beretta pistols and 159 bullets.

The Amlo found the couple had used money acquired from the sale of narcotics to buy properties in Thailand, Pol Col Seehanat said.

Wanchai Rujanawong, chief of the OAG’s Foreign Affairs Department and spokesman of the OAG, said the Dutch government had supplied information to Thai authorities that the suspects had smuggled illicit drugs from countries in this region into the Netherlands.

The gang had operated a coffee shop as a front for its illicit drug trading.

Drugs had been sold at the shop, bringing income of about 600-800 million baht annually to the shop, Mr Wanchai said.

The couple would face punishment in Thailand before being extradited to the Netherlands, Mr Wanchai said.

“The OAG will ask the Amlo to examine the couple’s assets at financial institutions and check where they have rented safes as authorities believe there are more items of their assets that are still being concealed,” the OAG spokesman said.

Mr. Sinchai Watthanasartsathorn (President of Buinessman Association and Tourism of Pattaya City, Chonburi province) revealed the amount of Russian tourists coming to Pattaya during the low season has fallen by 30%. The lack of Russian tourists coming to Pattaya has affected the Pattaya market because they spend more money than any other tourists that visit Pattaya.

The main cause of the decreasing amount of Russian tourists and other tourists might because of the economic problem with the army running the country and the weakening money value because of the Ukraine war crisis that affecting Russia too and their currency is down 10%. Many small travel agencies have gradually closed their businesses while the big travel agencies in Pattaya city such as Pegus (Thailand) Co., Ltd. have continued doing business.

Many hotel business operators in Pattaya city reveal that the hotel business in Pattaya city has been moderately affected from the decreasing amount of Russian tourists because of the political unrest and the curfew which has been enforced. Also Mr Sinchai said he doesn’t know if the situation will improve because Russian tourists book their hotels with short notice compared to Americans and Europeans who book well in advance.

Furthermore, there has also been a problem with insurance companies who will not insure tourists who travel to countries that have political unrest.
Russian tourists are now traveling to the new tourist destinations such as Vietnam and Myanmar which are a lot cheaper causing about 20% of the Russians tourists that came to Pattaya to go elsewhere.

On Friday at Nong Nooch Gardens in Jomtien, a meeting led by the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) was held to discuss plans to begin a crackdown on foreign business people who use Thai Nominee Shareholders to effectively control Thai companies.

At the meeting were over 100 delegates from the DSI, The Ministry of Commerce, Tourism Authority of Thailand and representatives from the public and private sector. They gathered to discuss how some Foreign business operators have exploited the Thai Nominee Shareholding loophole for many years, despite it being illegal under the Foreign Business Act of 1999.

The DSI would now like to see this loophole closed and investigations started on companies which use Thai Shareholders but are effectively controlled by Foreign Nationals.

They are particularly concerned with businesses associated with Tourism and at the meeting discussed how departments can cooperate better in the future to ensure these companies are detected and prosecuted if found to be in contravention of Thai Law.

PATTAYA CONDO MARKET

Pattaya condo market shrinks 60% in first half

Property takes direct hit from political turmoil

PATTAYA: 09-09-2014

The Pattaya condominium market shrunk 60 per cent in the first half of the year due to the effects of the political problems in Thailand, according to the Pattaya Condominium Market Research Report released by Colliers International Thailand.

Surachet Kongcheep, associate director of research at Colliers International, said about 3,800 units were launched in the first six months - about 60 per cent lower than in the second half of 2013.

Surachet said the number of new condominium units launched in first half of the year was significantly lower than second half of 2013 - except in Jomtien area, which was 48 per cent higher.

The political situation in the fourth quarter of 2013 and the first five months of 2014 directly affected the entire property market, including Pattaya city.

"There are more than 28,200 condominium units under construction in Pattaya city that are expected to be completed in second half of 2014," he said.

"Nearly 18,850 units are scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2014 in Jomtien, and approximately 4,290 more in 2015.

"Other locations have dramatically lower figures than Jomtien, because many large condominium projects [some with more than 1,000 units] have been launched in Jomtien in the past few years."

Surachet said the average take-up rate in the condominium market in Pattaya was still similar to the past few years.

He said the figure at the end of the first half of 2014 was approximately 73 per cent, a little higher than the previous six months.

This was due to the political situation, which had affected the consumer confidence of Thais, who postponed purchasing new property in the last quarter of 2013 and the first few months of 2014 across all locations in Thailand.

Many foreign countries had also warned their people about traveling to Thailand during the political unrest, and the juntas had not cancelled martial law. This also affected the confidence of foreign tourists.

Surachet said that all these issues directly affected the condominium market in Pattaya.

He said many foreigners bought a condo in Pattaya as a second home, while Thais chiefly bought a condo as a second home, an investment and a residence while working in Pattaya or nearby.

Many condominium projects had been launched in the past three years and some were still available.

This was another factor impacting on the market, because buyers had a lot of choice and could take more time before making a decision.

"Local Thais and foreign developers and big names from Bangkok are trying to attract more buyers through marketing campaigns such as a guaranteed yield in one to three years, which has attracted a lot of buyers," Surachet said.

He said the average selling price of a condo launched in the first half of 2014 was approximately Bt62,000 per square metre - similar to the price in the second half of 2013.
