Unregistered drones banned

Unregistered drones banned

Owners have been given 90 days from Friday to register their drones, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) announced on Wednesday.

NBTC Secretary General Takorn Tantasith said the decision was taken to deal with the rampant use of drones in Thailand, while only 350 are registered with the Civil Aviation of Thailand (CAT).
Takorn said owners of illegal drones should register them at the NBTC headquarters in Bangkok, its branches in many provinces, police stations and CAT offices.
Failure to register them within 90 days from Friday could result in a jail term of not more than five years and/or a fine of not more than Bt100,000 or both.
Takorn emphasised the complete ban on drones in the vicinity of the Royal Funeral of His Majesty the late King which is being held at Sanam Luang from October 25 to 29.
The radius of the ban is 19 kilometres from Sanam Luang that goes as far as the border of Samut Prakarn, Nakhon Pathom and Nonthaburi provinces.

"Thailand - land of gangsters" - even official ones

A video doing the rounds of social media showed a man seemingly representing a force meant to protect the public actually threatening one of them.
The footage that ended up on the Mem Pho Dam page showed a man get out of a pick-up and advance on a car carrying a gun.
According to the original poster "Cherries Hpy" the incident happened to her brother on the Rangsit to Pathum Thani Road to the north of Bangkok.
It was road rage - the man was claiming that the other car had cut in front of him.
But a sticker on the gun man's pick-up mentioned "Civil Protection Volunteer" in the Thai language.
Thai posters were quick to condemn the gun man with many saying that Thailand was out of control.
Nutcha Boonmalert spoke for many: "Thailand - it's wild out there".
While Kanya Charoenkul chipped in: "So many gangsters in Thailand".
Sanook reported on the incident though no mention has yet been made of police action in the matter.

Thai Vietjet adds Bt259 Bangkok-Krabi flights

Thai Vietjet will on April 5 begin flying directly between Krabi and Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok for Bt259, including taxes, surcharges and payment fee.
A320 aircraft with 180 seats will fly twice daily between the locales.
The airline said in a press release the new route represented its “determination to meet passenger demand for popular routes”.
“As Krabi is one of the biggest cities in the South and a highlight international tourist destination, the latest flight is expected to be very popular with both Thais and expat guests,” it said.
The 80-minute flights will depart Bangkok at 7.10am and 7.25pm and leave Krabi at 9.05am and 9.20pm.
The airline will now be flying to five domestic locales – between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket and Krabi – on top of its daily direct flights between Phuket and Chiang Rai.

Central bank steps in to slow baht slide

The central bank has 'sporadically' sold US dollars into the market recently to slow the current slide of the baht, says bank governor Veerathai Santiprabhob (upper left).

The Bank of Thailand has moved to curb the baht's rapid retreat against the greenback as the local currency hit a nine-month low.

The central bank has sporadically taken action against the currency's weakness by selling the US dollar to smooth out the baht's movement after it depreciated at a faster pace, lowering foreign reserves, said Bank of Thailand governor Veerathai Santiprabhob.

He said the move is normal practice for the central bank.

The baht, which was the second-best performing currency in Asia last year, depreciated around 2% so far this year to 33.26 to the dollar, compared with an almost 7% decline in India's rupee, a 6.5% weakness in the Philippines' peso, a 5.8% drop in the Indonesian rupiah and almost a 5% fall in the Korean won.

Bank of Thailand data reported foreign reserves fell to US$215 billion (7.15 trillion baht) in April, $231 billion in May and $207 billion last month from $216 billion in March.

Capital outflows have been spotted in Thai shares and bonds over the past few months, accelerating recently as investors fret over the US Federal Reserve's more hawkish stance on its monetary policy by signalling two more rate hikes this year, the European Central Bank's plan to end its bond purchase by the year-end and the tit-for-tat trade tariffs between the US and China.

Mr Veerathai said it was the central bank's duty to manage the baht for both upward and downward movement.

"We've prepared [built up foreign reserves] over the past two years," he said.

The lower foreign reserves could also be attributed to other foreign currencies' retreat against the dollar, as the Bank of Thailand typically allocates money into several major currencies for risk management and portfolio diversification purposes, he said.

"We've forecast that global uncertainties, especially monetary policy manoeuvring by major central banks, would have an impact on the country's offshore capital flows and local currencies. We've prepared sound international reserves to cushion against any shocks," he said.

The Thai economy has adequate buffers to withstand any immediate challenges, with ample international reserves covering 3.5 times short-term external debts; low dependency on external borrowing; and current account surplus of around 8-9% of GDP, he said.

Moreover, local banking sector is robust, with high capital adequacy ratio and stable domestic funding.

For the January-to-March quarter, the capital adequacy ratio of the banking system averaged 18%, among the highest in the region.

Mr Veerathai said the Sino-US trade spat has not yet had an impact on the country's exports as increased tariffs have been imposed on some industries and goods that do not directly harm Thailand, but an impact on the country's manufacturing supply chains is expected.

In the meantime, the incumbent governor said on the sidelines after the 2018 Asean business summit held by Bloomberg on Thursday that the Bank of Thailand is collaborating with other central banks to develop a regional financial system.

The cooperation spans several areas, including promoting regional currency use to facilitate higher Asean intra-trade.

Qualified Asean Bank (QAB) is another key policy regional central banks are collaborating on. The Bank of Thailand made its first Heads of Agreement on a reciprocal bilateral arrangement regarding QAB with Bank Negara Malaysia in March 2016. The bilateral arrangement is part of an umbrella agreement for the 10-member bloc called the Asean Banking Integration Framework, which provides greater access for indigenous Asean banks to other members' banking sectors, as well as operational flexibility on a reciprocal basis.

Travel package to be gifted to international rescuers as gratitude for cave mission

The Thai government has announced their plans to gift an all-expenses paid, week-long vacation to international rescuers as a reward for participating in the successful rescue of the “Wild Boar” soccer team at Chiang Rai’s Luang Cave.

Throughout the historic 18-day operation, a diverse team of volunteers from numerous countries flocked to the rescue site to offer their expertise in what was initially thought to be an “impossible mission.”

Some of the volunteers still in Chiang Rai or Bangkok have already accepted the paid holidays, but those who decided to travel back to their respective countries immediately still have a one-week Thai vacation awaiting them, said Worawit Taechasupakul, a secretary to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

While the itinerary has not been revealed, the volunteers will be given round-trip business class tickets courtesy of Thai Airways, free accommodation, and the Thailand Elite membership, which comes with a five-year travel visa, reported Thai PBS.

The Thailand Elite program usually charges a whopping THB520,000 (US$15,600) for the five-year visa. Some of the privileges includes VIP-expedited airport services and immigration formalities, access to a number of golf clubs, and discounts for spas and shopping.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said that the number of volunteers who will receive the reward has not yet been determined, and they will discuss further details in their next meeting at the end of this month.

The move is aimed at not only displaying Thailand’s immense gratitude, but to also encourage long-term friendly relations with each country.

Shameless Western couple caught having sex in the sea at Thailand’s notorious Pattaya resort

The tourists, believed to be Westerners, were swimming in the waters of Jomtien Beach, Pattaya, located 100miles south-east of the capital Bangkok

THIS is the moment two shameless Westerners were captured romping on a public beach in Thailand, sparking a police investigation.
Footage filmed from a parked car on a nearby street shows the pair bobbing up and down while members of the public wander past.

The tourists, believed to be Westerners, were swimming in the waters of Jomtien Beach, Pattaya, located 100miles south-east of the capital Bangkok.
It has been reported the men filming the outrageous scene can be heard saying in Thai: "What are you up to?"
Another replies: "I don't dare ask - they have been doing this for 10 minutes."
"Are they playing piggybank, or..?"

Local cops confirmed they were investigating the footage and may press charges if the couple are found to have broken local laws.
Pattaya is a particularly seedy Thai resort and is home to a notorious red light-district.
