Thai lady who donated 2 million baht from her lottery win in 2017, struck lottery again in 2018

People tend to call you a fool for believing in lottery tickets. "The system is rigged", "it's a once in a lifetime chance", and the classic "stop wasting money".
To the naysayers, we present Suwana, a 53-year-old woman from Thailand's Ang Thong province.
According to Shin Min Daily, Suwana purchased a lottery ticket back in 2017.
While she didn't expect to win, she managed to bag the grand prize of 30,000,000 baht (US$933,705).
Being the kind soul that she is, Suwana donated 2,000,000 baht (US$62,247) to build a temple and has been frequently donating to temples around Thailand ever since.
Towards the end of 2018, she found that a lottery ticket seller was not able to sell his last 7 tickets of the year, making them invalid come 2019.
Suwana bought out all the tickets from the seller, not to try her luck, but to help the man clear his stock.
She probably has an angel watching her back because 1 out of the 7 tickets she bought won her 12,000,000 baht (US$373,482) for the last draw of 2018.
Even winning that much money has not changed her personality, she will continue donating her money to charities and temples around Thailand.
Congrats again Suwana! We can only hope the rest of the world follows in your generosity.

Tourists 'threatened with death penalty' for taking selfies on beach in Thailand
« Απάντηση #586 στις: Απρίλιος 06, 2019, 13:08:38 μμ »
Tourists could face being threatened with the death penalty for taking selfies on a beach near a busy airport in Thailand, according to reports.

The beach close to Phuket International Airport is popular with holidaymakers - but people taking pictures while planes take off have reportedly angered airport bosses who say it could distract pilots.
Wichit Kaewsaithiam, the airport's Deputy General Manager, said: "We are setting up a safety zone which will be categorised as a strictly prohibited area that does not allow people and tourists to take pictures.
"Aside from this area, local people and tourists can still come to take pictures as usual."

Airport chiefs also reportedly warned tourists against flying drones and shining laser pens in the area to avoid distracting pilots.
Speaking about the acts which could distract pilots, Mr Kaewsaithiam told the Bangkok Post : "The maximum penalty is the death sentence."
Monrudee Gettuphan, a director at the Phuket International Airport, previously said officials were concerned about the safety of people who take selfies near planes, it is reported.
An official reportedly said people need to stay away from the restricted zone to prevent injury.
The warning was also to protect people's hearing being damaged by aircraft engines, reports said.

According to the Daily Mail , an official said: "The penalty for anyone failing to comply with this regulation includes the death penalty, a life sentence, or a jail term of between five to 20 years, as per the Air Aviation Act 1978."

HEALTH - More than 20,000 people in Thailand have been infected with dengue fever since January, 25 of whom have died, disease control officials said. Suwanchai Watthanayingcharoenchai, disease control department chief, said the number of infections has doubled compared to the same period in 2018.
In Bangkok alone, nearly 900 cases of dengue and one mortality were reported from January to March, according to the Bangkok Health Department.
Most patients are children aged 5 to 15 years old, but adults are also at risk. Statistics show that the disease is particularly endemic in areas by the Chao Phraya River such as Thonburi, Khlong San, Bang Kho Laem and Yannawa Districts.
Among the 11 diseases listed in the announcement, dengue, leptospirosis, influenza, diarrhea and conjunctivitis are most prevalent in urban areas. Some of these diseases can be deadly if left untreated.

Western Expats Fleeing Thailand for Malaysia
« Απάντηση #588 στις: Ιούλιος 03, 2019, 20:46:18 μμ »
Western expats who are tired of countries like Thailand where discrimination is the norm, are thrilled to be moving to Malaysia, where they can buy a house they want, do the job they want, get an easy visa and work permit and more.

BANGKOK – Over the last few decades Thailand has attracted expatriates to the country to work, stay long periods of time to explore the country, or retire.
In addition, Thailand has always been a place of interest for the traveller within the SE Asian region, where many like to stay medium- to long-term, sight-seeing, travelling, and ‘just hanging out’.
Retirement in Thailand is part of a global trend of people relocating from high income countries to lower income countries.
Thailand is now no longer the haven for those who want to retire in the country like before.
For many the dream of living in Thailand has turned sour, where cultural and social problems have brought abrupt endings their Thai lifestyle.
According to a recent article in Tastythailand.com more and more expats are leaving Thailand for greener pastures and many are moving to Malaysia.

Why Malaysia You Ask

No Discrimination For Western Expats – Unlike Thailand, which discriminates against western expats in the types of jobs they can do, the types of property they can buy, the bank loans they can get (or not!) in work permits, visas, and many more things, Malaysia does not discriminate.

Western expats who are tired of countries like Thailand where discrimination is the norm, are thrilled to be moving to Malaysia, where they can buy a house they want, do the job they want, get an easy visa and work permit and more.

Malaysia is Multi-Racial – Unlike some other countries in the region, Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic society and open to everyone. The three main cultures, Malay, Chinese and Indian create an interesting Malaysian society yet still leave it open for other cultures to join and thrive.

Living in Malaysia, you’ll experience the main Malay, Chinese and Indian festivals, food, literature, clothing, religion, and culture, along with offerings from the Thais, British, Americans, Vietnamese, Australians, Dutch, French and more.

Affordable Healthcare – Healthcare in Malaysia is world-class and more affordable than in the United States. Doctors and hospitals are the same standard, or better, than American doctors and hospitals and care is world-renowned. In fact, healthcare is so good in Malaysia, it’s one of the top destinations for medical tourism. Living in Malaysia, you can only imagine how good your healthcare options will be.

Education – Malaysia’s education system is largely based on the British system and, consequently, is better than some other countries in the region such as Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Mandatory subjects include Malay and English, so any children you have are likely to grow up fluent in both languages.

Education is inexpensive and, if you prefer private education, this is available also with many international schools that use the British, American and Australian systems.

Ease of Language – Unlike in some other countries in the area, English is spoken by most people in Malaysia. When an expat moves to Malaysia that fact can immediately make life much easier, as there’s no need to speak the local language to get things done.

Buying a house, a car, setting up utilities, buying furniture and household items, everything is easier due to being able to deal with things in English.

Good Infrastructure – Malaysia has a world-class infrastructure. Roads are excellent. The water supply, sewer systems and power grids are stable and telecommunications, including phones and internet, are phenomenal.Moving to, living and working in Malaysia for western expats is made even easier due to its western-standard infrastructure.

Food – Western expats love Malaysia because the food is wonderful. With Malay, Indian and Chinese cuisine being the most popular foods, you’ll also find American, British, Vietnamese, Thai, French, German, Spanish and on and on. Food is also cheap. An average meal at many of Malaysia’s restaurants is only $2-$4, and if you eat at the food courts and markets, it’s even cheaper.

Cost of Living – One of the big reasons many western expats are moving to Malaysia is the cost of living. As low as neighboring Thailand, salaries are higher, so standard of living is slightly better.

In Malaysia, you can live on one quarter the salary of most western countries and live well, which is why western expats who are retirees love living here. Apartments are cheap, buying homes is cheaper than in Europe and the US, healthcare is cheaper, eating out is cheaper, and shopping is cheaper.

If you are looking for a country that is developed yet not going to kill your bank account, then Malaysia is it.

If you are a western expat looking for a new country to move to, moving to Malaysia may just be the thing for you. The Malaysian government is also currently promoting a new program called “Malaysia My Second Home:, encouraging foreigners to either move to Malaysia or spend an extended period of time there.

Foreigner robbed of 800,000 baht on his first day back in Isaan village

A 32 year old man from the United States had a terrible first day back in his Thai wife's village when thieves made off with cash and valuables worth 800,000 baht.

Craig Bennett (name transliterated from Thai and possibly incorrect) and his wife Sumruay, 36, had arrived back in Thailand from the States and had headed immediately for the village of Thung Wang in Sateuk district of Buriram in Thailand's North East.

They were staying at Sumruay's mother's house and were preparing to have a house blessing ceremony at a property built for the family.

But at 2 am they were disturbed by noises and saw a thin man flee with valuables kept in a bag. He jumped on a motorcycle with an accomplice and escaped into the night.

It was the couple's first night back.

The thief got $10,000 US, an ATM card, Thai money and 5 baht weight of gold. They even took Mr Bennett's passport. It was all valued at 800,000 baht.

Sumruay went on TV to say to say she wouldn't press charges if they got everything back.

YouTube posters were in no doubt that this was an inside job. Many sympathized with the foreigner.

Police said it should be a simple matter to arrest those responsible.

13 Bangkok passengers refused entry into Thailand by immigration police
« Απάντηση #590 στις: Ιούλιος 30, 2019, 11:41:20 πμ »
13 Bangkok passengers refused entry into Thailand by immigration police

Region 2 immigration police at Suvarnabhumi airport report that they denied entry to 13 foreigners who weren’t able to provide proof of funds to support their travelling whilst visiting Thailand. Immigration officials claim the ‘tourists’ were not visiting Thailand for tourism.

Apart from not being able to provide evidence of sufficient funds, the arriving passengers didn’t have travel insurance either.

There were three from India, Myanmar and Ethiopia, and another two from South Korea and Vietnam. Immigration police told Naew Na that they were using the provisions in Article 12, sections 2 and 9, to refuse entry of the passengers.

The 13 passengers were held at the airport awaiting flights back to their home countries.

Thai police say total six bombs exploded in Bangkok
« Απάντηση #591 στις: Αύγουστος 02, 2019, 10:55:30 πμ »

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Six small bomb blasts wounded at least four people in Bangkok on Friday, as the Thai capital hosted a Southeast Asian security meeting with top diplomats from the United States, China and other world powers.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha ordered an investigation into the bombs, a blow to Thailand’s image during the high profile event and barely two weeks after his former military junta transformed into a civilian government.

The first small explosions were heard during rush hour, just before 9 a.m. (0200 GMT), at two sites in central Bangkok. Further blasts hit a government complex hosting several ministries in the north of the city.

Four people were wounded, the Erawan Medical Center said.

Airports of Thailand considering closing Chiang Rai Aiport
« Απάντηση #592 στις: Οκτώβριος 28, 2019, 10:01:57 πμ »
Airports of Thailand considering closing Chiang Rai Aiport

The future of Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai Airport may be limited with Airports of Thailand reported to be considering closing it along with Hat Yai airport in the south of Thailand due to low passenger numbers and lack of services.

According to The Nation, the decision to possibly close both airports may also be due to financial considerations.

In Hat Yai’s case, AoT is considering consolidating services with both the existing and planned second airport in Phuket as passengers and flights through the airport are declining.

The reasoning behind closing Chiang Rai Airport, however, is not as clear. Chiang Rai Airport had 2.8 million passengers in 2018, nearly double the number it had in 2015 and is Thailand’s eight busiest airport. The airport continues to see healthy growth with AirAsia having launched four new routes from the airport in January although one service, a direct flight to Singapore, was cut in August.

The nearest airport to Chiang Rai is Chiang Mai, just over 200 kilometers to the south or a three hour, 30-minute drive due to the never-ending roadworks on Chiang Mai – Chiang Rai Road (Highway 118) through Pa Miang, Doi Saket. How you would transport millions of passengers who want to visit Chiang Rai on that highway is impossible to guess.

Notably, Thailand does have a number of smaller airports that are not operated by AoT which operate without issue – airports in Lampang and Nan for example and do so without the risk of closing down.

The final decision has not been made with AoT said to be seeking additional sources of income to cover losses but the fact it is even being considered is short-sighted at the very least.

Trump hits Thai seafood industry over worker rights
« Απάντηση #593 στις: Οκτώβριος 28, 2019, 20:36:54 μμ »
Trump hits Thai seafood industry over worker rights
Thailand is the world's third largest seafood exporter but its supplier status has been tainted reports of slave labour.

Donald Trump will suspend trade preferences for Thailand's seafood industry after it failed to take steps to improve worker rights, dealing a blow to the multibillion-dollar sector.

Thailand is the world's third-largest seafood exporter but its supplier status has been badly tainted in recent years by reports of slave labour and trafficking among the mainly migrant workforce.

All Thai seafood products will lose their eligibility for the trade preferences due to "longstanding worker rights issues in the seafood and shipping industries," Bloomberg News reported Saturday, quoting the Office of the US Trade Representative.

The suspension of the trade preferences - which Bloomberg said are worth $1.3bn - will go into effect on April 25, 2020, according to a letter sent Friday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"I have determined that Thailand is not taking steps to afford workers in Thailand internationally recognized worker rights ... it is appropriate to suspend the duty-free treatment," Trump said in the letter.

Under the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) programme, eligible countries are able to import certain goods into the US duty-free.

Other items losing duty-free preferences include fruits and vegetables, garment products and electrical appliances.

According to the Office of the US Trade Representative, Made-In-Thailand exports to the US totalled $31.9bn in 2018, with electrical machinery making up the majority of goods coming in.
'Pathetic'

The US suspension comes despite the European Union recently striking Thailand from its warning list in January, seeing efforts made by the government to tackle illegal fishing.

Thailand had been on the list since 2015 after allegations of rampant labour rights abuses in its fishing fleets.

Phil Robertson, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Asia division applauded the move on Saturday, calling Thailand's enforcement of worker protections "pathetic".

"For years, Thailand has failed to protect both Thai and migrant workers from neighbouring countries from unscrupulous employers who fire anyone that stands up to demand their rights," Robertson said. "Reform is long overdue."

Thailand's government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat on Saturday declined to comment on the suspension.

Thai Authorities confirm sixth case of Coronavirus found in Thailand

Thai Authorities confirm sixth case of Coronavirus found in Thailand in city of Hua Hin

A 73 year old Chinese tourist who had undergone tests having fallen ill with flu-like symptoms has been confirmed as having coronavirus, health officials have said.

The tourist travelled from Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the outbreak to Suvarnabhumi Airport on January 19, 2020, before traveling to Hua Hin. The tourist reported a high fever on January 23 and was admitted to hospital.

The new case in Hua Hin brings the total coronavirus cases in Thailand to six.

Following the announcement, all hotels in Hua Hin have been instructed to check the passports of any Chinese tourists arriving at the hotel, with staff told to immediately inform health officials if any tourists appear sick or show flu-like symptoms.

Hua Hin district chief Thanon Panphipat, who made the announcement, said that monitoring arrivals at hotels was a precautionary measure needed to help prevent the possible spread of the coronavirus given that large numbers of Chinese tourists are expected in Hua Hin during the Chinese New Year festival.

Officials have also announced that passengers arriving at Hua Hin Airport will be screened.

The news comes as Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced he will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday with senior officials from the Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Tourism and Sports to discuss how to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Thailand.

More preventative measures will then be submitted for cabinet approval on Tuesday.

Almost 7,000 people from Wuhan visited Thailand this month

High-level sources in the tourism industry revealed that Chinese tourists made up almost 30 per cent of the foreign visitors passing through Don Mueang Airport every day.
Statistics of foreign passengers travelling to Thailand via Don Mueang showed that of the nearly 24,000 people every day, Chinese tourists, on average, accounted for nearly 7,500 people.
From January 3-24, there were 43 flights from Wuhan city which brought 6,982 people.
However, six flights of Thai AirAsia scheduled to fly to and from Wuhan city to Don Mueang and Phuket airports during January 23-28 have all been cancelled.

BANGKOK — Thailand's richest man looks to build a factory in five weeks to begin production of 3 million hygienic masks monthly, as the country combats the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

Dhanin Chearavanont, senior chairman of top Thai conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group, said Thursday that CP will invest roughly 100 million baht ($3.19 million). The group's main companies focus on livestock farming, food processing, retail and telecommunications, but mask production is not an area of expertise.

"We will utilize our global network to source machines and materials of hygienic standard, with the objective to help with the prevention especially for COVID-19," the group said, referring to the disease caused by the new virus.

CP Group intends to supply the masks for free to medical staff at hospitals in need, and also to people who may lack access to masks to protect themselves.

CP joins several Asian companies that are moving into mask production to cope with the outbreak. Top global electronics manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Foxconn, decided to build its own production line for surgical masks in Shenzhen early last month to ensure enough supply for its workers returning from the Lunar New Year holiday.

Japanese electronics maker Sharp, a Foxconn group company, decided to convert clean rooms designed for producing liquid crystal display panels into lines for making surgical masks.

Dhanin ranked as the 75th-richest person worldwide in Forbes' Billionaires 2019 list, with wealth estimated at $16.4 billion as of Thursday. He is the youngest of four Chearavanont brothers, who contributed to the exponential expansion of the nearly 100-year-old conglomerate. The Chearavanont brothers led the Thailand's Richest list compiled by Forbes.

Thailand currently reports 47 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with one fatality.

The mask shortage is apparent on the streets of Bangkok. Stocks evaporate as soon as they arrive in stores. Yet online flippers are selling masks at far higher than the normal price. An online shopper was charged 20 baht per surgical mask, which used to cost 0.7 baht.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Wednesday that an investigation will be conducted into the shortage.

Charoen Pokphand Foods, the conglomerate's food processing arm, said Wednesday it will supply food to individuals suspected of having COVID-19 as well as to medical staff at public hospitals nationwide.

A quick recovery from the outbreak also offers returns for CP. Travel restrictions imposed by various countries have harmed Thailand's tourism industry, which accounts for roughly 20% of the country's gross domestic product.

CP Group and real estate subsidiary Magnolia Quality Development share a 49% stake in Iconsiam, a luxury mall on west bank of the Chao Phraya River that draws many tourists, especially from China.
