64th royal wedding anniversary


The 64th wedding anniversary of Their Majesties the King and Queen is celebrated in Prachuap Khiri Khan on Monday.

Thousands of people stand along the road to enjoy a parade organised by the provincial administration. Over 5,000 people dress up in Thai traditional clothing and march in the parade.

Beautiful fireworks light up the night while an orchestra band plays songs composed by His Majesty the King.

Testing the waters



The Royal Thai Navy’s Marine Corps landed in Narathiwat as part of its training exercise on Wednesday.
HTMS Angthong, the new landing platform dock ship, was deployed for the first time in the training alongside 12 other ships.
The RTN's 2014 exercise started from the Gulf of Thailand to Narathiwat HTMS Angthong, the biggest landing platform dock ship of the RTN, along with 12 other ships, sailed from the Gulf of Thailand and the troops landed in Narathiwat.
The exercise aims to prepare the RTN for possible threats.
The training also tests the performances of officers and their commanders, as well as their responses and coordination in face of danger.
The objective is to train its officers to optimise the use of resources and personnel.
RTN commander Adm Narong Pipatnasai monitors the exercise at the naval base in Muang district, Narathiwat.

Damage from the Chiang Rai quake



An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale that shook the northern province of Chiang Rai on Monday has caused severe damage to hotels, shopping malls, temples, houses and roads.

Yingluck removed from office


The Constitutional Court on Wednesday ruled to remove caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and nine other cabinet members from office for unlawful transfer of Thawil Pliensri as secretary-general of the National Security Council in 2011.
Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisarn has been appointed as acting caretaker premier.

Safe swimming



According to official statistics, 15,495 children lost their lives in swimming accidents from 2002 to 2013, averaging 1,291 a year.
To lower the number of swimming accidents during summer holidays where overall deaths from drowning are high, the government's Department of Physical Education offers free swimming lessons for youths under 15 years old.
People can apply for the 60-hour course at the National Stadium from March to May, 2014.

Auspicious Visakha Bucha


A parade carries relics of the Lord Buddha from the Temple of the Emerald Buddha to Sanam Luang on May 11 to give Buddhists an opportunity to pay their respects. The relics will remain there until May 17



Miss Universe Thailand


Forty contestants of the Miss Universe Thailand 2014 pageant began their social activities in Roi Et province on Monday.
After returning to Bangkok, they are scheduled to appear on stage in live TV broadcast on May 16 and the winner will be announced on the following day.



Political rift wider than ever


The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship movement has become increasingly active as political temperature rises.
A sea of red covered Utthayan Road in Nakhon Pathom province on Monday, where UDD supporters drummed up its pro-democracy campaign focusing on holding a fresh election as soon as possible.
In downtown Bangkok, anti-government protesters vacated its base at Lumpini Park and set up a new stage on Rachadamnoen Road, determined to push reform and an interim government before the next election.As fear of a civil war grips the nation, Post photographers have compiled a set of photos depicting the atmosphere of the two protest sites.

Rising Tension


The meeting between the Election Commission (EC) and acting caretaker Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan was cut short after the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) supporters marched to the Royal Thai Airforce headquarters, prompting government delegates to end the meeting and flee.
Amid tension, PDRC secretary-general Suthep Tuagsuban has given the Senate a two-day deadline to appoint a candidate as an interim prime minister while the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) has threatened that appointing unelected premier could plunge Thailand into civil War.
The attacks at two PDRC rally sites early Thursday saw three people killed and 20 more injured.
With the current political deadlock, authorities are concerned that small skirmishes could turn into an all out war.
Army Chief Prayuth Chan-ocha says the army is ready to take action if violence and bloodshed continue.

In pictures: Thailand comes under martial law

                             

 
   The surprise announcement of the imposition of martial law in Thailand came before dawn Tuesday - the military said it was necessary to keep the country stable after six months of unrest.  

 
   The move effectively places the army in charge of public security across the country. Senior soldiers insist however that their actions do not amount to a coup.  

 
   Armed troops entered numerous private television stations throughout Bangkok to pass on an appeal to people to stay calm and carry on with their normal working lives.  

 
   Most people in Bangkok seems to respond to the army's move with equanimity, with commuters seen driving and walking to work as usual.  

 
   Troops took positions at all key positions in Bangkok, including outside the headquarters of the Royal Thai Police, underneath a picture of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.  

 
   Thailand's army has staged 11 coups since the end of the absolute monarchy in 1932 - senior generals argue that a 1914 law that gives it authority to intervene during times of crisis.  

 
   Thailand has been unstable since 2006, when former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was toppled by a military coup after being accused of corruption, abuse of power and disrespect for the king.  

 
   On a major roads alongside the country's most luxurious shopping malls, commuters passed soldiers in jeeps mounted with machine guns.

Army invokes martial law


The Royal Thai Army on Tuesday declared martial law across the crisis-gripped kingdom to restore order following months of anti-government protests that have left 28 people dead and hundreds wounded.
An announcement broadcast on army-run TV Channel 5 said martial law had been invoked "to restore peace and order for people from all sides", stressing that the move "is not a coup".
